In an open letter to the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU, we urge the EU leaders to lead on a swift and supportive revision of the Weights and Dimensions Directive – an important enabler to accelerate the deployment of ZEVs.

The letter warns that recent Council discussions risk slowing the shift to clean freight. The letter also highlights the need for full road access across the EU and support for intermodal transport.

Luke Parker, Policy Manager at DHL Group, said: The review of the W&D Directive is critical to support the decarbonisation of Europe’s logistics sector. Moderate weight allowances for zero-emission trucks can facilitate long-haul trucking and help to support a level-playing field with diesel vehicles. To give planning clarity to European companies investing in ZEVs, and avoid fragmentation, it is important that these vehicles can operate across a broad road network in all EU Member States.

Together with EV100, Smart Freight Centre and E-Mobility Europe, ECTA calls on the Danish Presidency and all EU Member States to swiftly reach an agreement that supports zero-emission road freight in Europe.

Bernardo Galantini, Freight Officer at T&E, added: Exactly two years ago today, the Commission proposed this revision – and it’s still not done. The Danish Presidency has pledged to conclude negotiations, but Member States must now come together and reach a working agreement that accelerates the shift to zero-emission vehicles. The time to deliver is now.
