The European Clean Trucking Alliance (ECTA) supports Europe’s transition to zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles. The ongoing industrial shift to clean technologies drives innovation and economic prosperity and is essential to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
The CO2 standards for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), which entered into force in June 2024, are a landmark agreement to reduce CO2 emissions in this sector. They define zero-emission trucks as either battery-electric (BEV), hydrogen fuel cell electric (FCEV), or hydrogen combustion engine (H2-ICE) vehicles, provided emit no more than 3gCO2/tonne-km.
ECTA reiterates that BEV, FCEV and H2-ICE each have a role in achieving the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality goal. The market will decide which of these technologies will prevail for which heavy-duty segment and application, but ECTA Members do not exclude any. Total cost of ownership assessment and readiness of related infrastructure will guide investment decisions in clean technologies.
